In January 2024, after a relentless year, we set off on our third moto-adventure in Thailand. Over 2,880 kilometers, we explored the Isaan region, rode along the Lao border, and navigated the winding roads to Chiang Mai. The highlight was the Mae Hong Son loop, a dizzying series of hairpin turns through breathtaking mountain scenery. From there, we journeyed back through central Thailand and wound up in Hua Hin. Along the way, we devoured every bit of Thai food we could find—though Dalma took it a step further and ate bugs. (Gross!) Despite a full month of adventure, Thailand left us wanting more. There’s so much we didn’t see, and one thing’s for sure—we’ll be back.

We come to the end of our trip. We ride from Damneon Saduak to Bangkok for one last night, and then leave for Australia. This trip has only whetted our appetite for riding in South East Asia though. We’ll be back.

We leave Hua Hin and wend our way to the floating market of Damneon Saduak, our last stop before Bangkok and home.

Riding to the seaside resort of Hua Hin. Dalma has a tumble.

We emerge. Blurrily. And ride from Chiang Mai to the hippy paradise of Pai along the fabled Mae Hong Son loop.

Today, we consider the importance of taking breaks as we travel from Uttaradit to Chiang Mai.

Riding from Chiang Khan really felt like regional Thailand. Winding narrow highways with few cars on them. Isolated petrol pumps. It felt like off the beaten track.

Riding from Petchabun to Chiang Khan felt remote. Lots of hills and potholed roads.

We ride through a series of empty roads on our way from Khorat to Petchabun. We encounter challenges, scenic but empty Thai roads, and cultural experiences, reflecting on travel, time constraints, and the pursuit of adventure on two wheels.

A little pootle on the bike today to the outstanding ruins of Phimai.

This was the day! We braved Bangkok’s traffic and made the long ride out to Khorat for the first stop of our ride. It would be an adventure, a long day, and a riding challenge.

After battling jet lag, we found ourselves in Bangkok’s On Nut, a mix of expats and locals. We ditched overpriced food chains, opting for local eats and amazing coffee. After picking up our bikes, the real Bangkok traffic hit—chaotic, but not Delhi-level madness. A missing camera screw sent me on an adventure past night markets, and I returned triumphant. Now, Dalma sleeps while I plot our next move.

Our New Year trip to Thailand kicked off with a gig-induced hangover, a groggy Dalma and an airport curry. Scoot generously delayed our flight by three hours. Singapore’s transit? Surprisingly smooth. We got to Bangkok a day late. Bangkok’s Grab service was a win, delivering us to our sheep-themed hotel in no time. All in all, it had the essential travel trifecta: hell, heartbreak, and hangover.

I think everyone can breathe a sigh as 2023 draws to a close. Certainly it’s been a crazy year for us and one for which we need another adventure to recharge. We thought about Eastern Java, but eventually settled on Thailand. Dalma has never been there, so it seemed appropriate. (Mind, she’d also never been […]
